"The NMC Horizon Report" series is the most visible outcome of the New Media Consortium (NMC) Horizon Project, an ongoing research effort established in 2002 that identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, research, or creative expression within every sector of education in some 65 countries around the globe. This volume, "The NMC Horizon Report: 2014 K-12 Edition," examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in teaching, learning, and creative expression in schools. The hope is that the report is useful to educators worldwide, and the international composition of the advisory board reflects the care with which a global perspective was assembled. While there are many local factors affecting the practice of education, there are also issues that transcend regional boundaries, questions common to K-12 education, and it was with these in mind that this report was created. "The NMC Horizon Report: 2014 K-12 Edition" is the sixth in the annual K-12 education series of reports and is produced by the NMC in collaboration with the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), and with the generous support of HP's Office of Living Progress. For the NMC Horizon Report: 2014 K-12 Edition, an expert panel identified 18 topics very likely to impact technology planning and decision-making: six key trends, six significant challenges, and six important developments in educational technology. To create the report, an international body of experts in education, technology, and other fields was convened as a panel. The Expert Panel came to a consensus about the topics that would appear in the NMC Horizon Report: 2014 K-12 Edition. They selected the framework of the "Up-Scaling Creative Classrooms in Europe" (CCR) project, developed by the European Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) on behalf of the Directorate-General on Education and Culture (chart pictured on page 4), as the basis to surface the systemic implications of the six trends and six challenges. The CCR Framework sees learning environments, wherever they may be found, as "live ecosystems" that evolve over time, changing in tune with the context and culture in which they reside. The framework focuses on the systemic approaches that are needed to scale up innovative pedagogical practices, especially in ICT-enabled learning settings. The report provide a discussion of each of the trends highlighted by the expert panel that includes an overview of the trend, its implications, and curated recommendations for further reading on the topic.
