In this autoethnographic research study, I examined my journey as an experienced superintendent in developing an effective relationship with the Board of Education in a new school district. This study examined the relevant research on the importance of the relationship between the Board and the superintendent of schools, the characteristics of a highly effective board-superintendent relationship, and the strategies shown to result in developing a high performing governance team. This autoethnographic inquiry centered on my journey as school district superintendent describing my path from one district to another, a brief interlude with another board, before finally reaching my preferred destination. Throughout my journey, the relationship between the superintendent and Board of Education was the central theme and the central characters of the story were the members of the Board and their supporting staff. At the end of the journey described herein, a summary of the research findings and lessons learned for developing an effective relationship with the Board are discussed from this superintendent's perspective. The experiences of the superintendent as outlined in the autoethnographic narrative indicated that the superintendent and Board of Education working collaboratively to clearly define their roles and responsibilities serve as the basis for the establishment of an effective governance team. Important factors impacting the superintendent successfully establishing an effective relationship with the Board were communication, local culture, board training, and the governance team's ability to understand and respond to the issues of key stakeholders. In this study, an effective relationship between the superintendent and the Board led to a commitment to ongoing training and professional development and the launching of a community wide strategic planning initiative. Implications for policy, practice, and action were discussed, along with recommendations for future research.
