Tweeting the Good News--and Other Ways to Use Social Media
Larkin, Patrick
Educational Leadership, v70 n7 p70-72 Apr 2013
School leaders need to look beyond the hyped stories of social media being misused by teenagers. They must begin thoughtfully using tools like Twitter and Facebook to help their students gain skills and to reach out to their communities. Larkin, principal of Burlington High School in Massachusetts and a well-known advocate for technology in education, makes the case for principals using social media constructively. He describes Burlington's transformation from a school that didn't even allow cell phones in classes to one that now trains its teachers in social media applications, participates in an online professional learning network to help its 1:1 laptop program thrive, and operates a student-run service that troubleshoots for teachers who are integrating technology into classrooms. Burlington High also puts out all school news through its blog, Twitter account, and Facebook page. (Contains 1 endnote.)
