Many who have been in physical education for years may remember a world where technology was non-existent. The only teaching tools available to physical educators were athletic equipment and a gymnasium. However, the world during the past two decades has changed rapidly. The growth and development of technology has vastly expanded the possibilities for delivering instruction in both K-12 and higher education. But keeping with these changes may be more difficult. Being "tech savvy" can vary widely from person to person and school to school based either on teacher interest and/or the technology available. When summarizing technology available to physical education professionals at all levels, three primary classifications result. These include (1) physical activity monitoring/participation devices; (2) platforms for dissemination of content information; and (3) tools for conducting assessment and maintaining student records. This article is the first in a 6-part series of articles on becoming tech savvy. This article and future articles will discuss these classifications in greater detail providing the physical educator with an overview and specific instruction into effectively implementing various types of technology into the physical education setting. As technology use is a growing trend, the next series of articles will provide practitioners with detailed strategies for implementing technology into physical education.
