Theories of School Counseling for the 21st Century
Dollarhide, Colette T., Ed.; Lemberger-Truelove, Matthew E., Ed.
Oxford University Press
In 2002, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) presented the ASCA National Model for school counseling programs as a framework for implementing best practices in training counselors to deliver effective evidence-based approaches for K-12 students. Without a unifying theory of practice, school counselors are often uncertain about how to implement the National Model. Considering school counselors' professional role under the National Model, "Theories of School Counseling for the 21st Century" offers readers a compilation of contemporary, cutting-edge theoretical models to inform the way school counselors practice the art and science of school counseling. This book contains the following chapters: (1) The Context of Professional School Counseling: The Need for Theory (Colette T. Dollarhide and Matthew E. Lemberger-Truelove); (2) General History and Conceptual Frameworks for School Counseling (Chris Slaten, Anya Woronzoff Verriden, and Thomas W. Baskin); (3) Organizational, Institutional, and Political Challenges and Responsibilities in Professional School Counseling (Trish Hatch); (4) Person-Centered School Counseling (Kimberly M. Jayne and Hayley L. Stulmaker); (5) Adlerian School Counseling (Erika R.N. Cameron, Kara P. Ieva, and Brianne France); (6) Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in the Schools (Melissa Mariani and Brett Zyromski); (7) Counseling for Results: Reality Therapy in Action (Robert E. Wubbolding); (8) School Counseling from an Existential Perspective (Brian Hutchison and Tom Chavez); (9) Solution-Focused School Counseling (John J. Murphy); (10) Strengths-Based School Counseling (SBSC) 2.0 (Patrick Akos, Clare Merlin-Knoblich, and Kevin Duquette); (11) Ecological School Counseling (H. George McMahon and E. C. M. Mason); (12) An Advocating Student-Within-Environment Approach to School Counseling (Matthew E. Lemberger-Truelove and Hannah Bowers); and (13) The Discrimination Model for School Counseling Supervision (Melissa Luke and Kristopher M. Goodrich).
