The "Unplugged" Project

Most of today's college students live in a world in which they are connected "24/7" (i.e. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Unlike their professors, students are true "digital natives." Young Americans spend more than seven and a half hours a day with some sort of electronic device, and because most of them are multitasking with those devices, "they pack on average nearly 11 hours of media content into that seven and a half hours," as reported by a new study from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (2010). With the advent of texting, tweeting, and the increased popularity of social networking sites, digital communication use shows no evidence of slowing down. The ubiquity of digital media can obscure from users the amount of time spent "plugged in," as well as its impact on their personal, social, and community lives. This article presents the "Unplugged" project, which helps students become more aware of the time they typically spend using various media and the role digital media plays in their lives. The project encourages students to become more thoughtful about how their media use affects their communication and all aspects of their lives. While digital media is here to stay, awareness and understanding its role is a first step toward becoming mindful, critical, and intelligent users of these powerful tools, rather than unwitting drones mindlessly moving from device to device.
