Desegregated Schools, Unequal Assignments
Marshall, Tanji Reed
Educational Leadership, v76 n7 p68-73 Apr 2019
The U.S. Supreme Court's "Brown v. Board" decision brought with it a myriad of unintended consequences. Perhaps most notably, it exposed black students to subpar assignments and deficit thinking. These inequities, in fact, persist today: In one TNTP study, classrooms of mostly white students were 1.5 times more likely to receive grade-appropriate assignments and nearly four times more likely to receive grade-appropriate lessons. Many white educators, through inherited bias or inadequate support, continue to harbor deficit perspectives and question the intellectual capacity of black students. As a result, explains Tanji Reed Marshall of The Education Trust, black students remain under- and miseducated.
