Advocacy Groups Deliver Guidelines for Schools Facing Sexual-Orientation Issues
Curriculum Review, v45 n9 p7 May 2006
Groups that often find themselves on opposing sides of the cultural war over gay rights have bridged their divide to draft consensus guidelines designed to help public schools address sexual-orientation issues with sensitivity and respect. Representatives from the Christian Educators Association International and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network served on the drafting committee and endorsed the model process primarily crafted by Charles Haynes, senior scholar at the First Amendment Center, and Wayne Jacobsen of BridgeBuilders, an organization that helps schools and communities find common ground on religious issues. This article provides some tips for school officials from the five-page guidelines, "Public Schools and Sexual Orientation: A First Amendment Framework for Finding Common Ground," which are also endorsed by the American Association of School Administrators and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
