Journal de classe (A Class Diary). Acts of the Colloquium of the Swiss Interuniversity Commission for Applied Linguistics. CILA Bulletin, No. 26.
Gruninger, Yvonne
Extracts from a journal kept by a French-speaking adult student in an intensive German language class are presented here. It is a critique of the audio-visual method, texts, teaching techniques, and students' reactions during the two parts of the course at the University of Berne. The extracts deal particularly with a comparison of the texts used in the course: "Audio-visuelles Unterrichtswerk - Deutsch I" (Didier) and "Deutsch 2000" (Max Huber Verlag). Among the conclusions drawn, the following appear to be important: (1) the course owed its success in large part to the instructor; (2) the method may well encourage the student to "dive into" the foreign language environment immediately and to manage quite well in the foreign language; and (3) the method has the practical advantage of distinguishing those who catch on quickly and those who are not likely to succeed.
