The Italian Job: An Exercise in Turning Forces
Follows, Mike
Physics Education, v53 n6 Article 065008 Nov 2018
The 1969 version of "The Italian Job" is used as context for teaching turning forces and introducing or enhancing the understanding of equilibrium and Newton's Third Law of Motion. A Harrington Legionnaire coach is used as the getaway vehicle for a gold heist and the film ends on a genuine cliffhanger, with the rear half of the coach hanging over the edge of a cliff and the leader of the gang declaring that he has a 'great idea' for recovering the gold without sending it and the gang over the precipice. Using realistic data for the coach as well as the value of gold at the time, two approaches are offered: one open-ended and the other more structured. Solving this problem was set as a competition by the Royal Society of Chemistry a decade ago. The winning solution is critiqued and a more practical solution is suggested.
