A study of 20 faculty development fellows' self-concept as a clinical teacher, before and after a fellowship, revealed a substantial change in self-perception on two of the factors, and increased congruence with perceptions of an ideal teacher. Of the responding 20 participants, 12 were pursuing careers in science and medicine, and half of the 16 respondents with career plans reported that the program had influenced their career decisions. Since 1959 selected sophomore pathology students have been offered a fellowship to work as junior faculty members for one year between their second and third years in medical school. A recent evaluation of that program is reported in which objective and subjective measures indicate program goals are being attained. (JT)
