Navigating through Measurement in Grades 3-5 (with CD-ROM)
Anderson, Nancy Canavan; Gavin, M. Katherine; Dailey, Judith; Stone, Walter; Vuolo, Janice
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
This book follows students' natural progression from measuring with informal or nonstandard units to using standard units to measure such attributes as length, weight, angle, and temperature. Activities extend students' learning to the measurement of two- and three-dimensional objects. Students work in a variety of lively real-world contexts, gathering measurement benchmarks in a classroom scavenger hunt and investigating the area of a rectangle while acting as owners of a sticker factory, for example. Following an introduction, this book is divided into the following four chapters: (1) Understanding the Process of Measurement; (2) Understanding Standard Units of Measurement; (3) Measuring Two-Dimensional Shapes; and (4) Measuring Three-Dimensional Objects. A section titled "Looking Back and Looking Ahead," as well as appendices, follows. The supplemental CD-ROM features interactive electronic activities, master copies of activity pages for students, and additional readings for teachers.
