Instructional Practices among Alternatively Certified Elementary Teachers
Bisland, Beverly Milner; Malow-Iroff, Micheline S.; O'Connor, Evelyn A.
Online Submission, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Francisco, CA, Apr 8, 2006)
This study investigates the teaching practices of newly certified elementary teachers in an alternative master's degree program. This study evaluates questions concerning teaching methodology utilized by the respondents in the major curriculum areas of elementary education. The questions ask about the new teacher's use of direct instruction, scripted lessons, instruction based on student experiences and instruction based on student questions. The respondents are asked the subject area for each type of instruction and the percentage of classroom time used for each type of instruction. The intent of the survey questions is to determine to what extent, if any, pedagogical theory is reflected in the instructional practices of new alternatively certified teachers.
