This collection of articles, originally published in national and international journals, is fifth in a series devoted to trends in teaching chemistry. The volume is divided into nine sections, each with an introduction explaining why papers have been selected and outlining their particular interest. Section I provides a list of atomic masses, table of SI units, and chronologies of discovery of elements and chemical achievements. Section II is devoted to various aspects of chemistry curriculum and instruction, including what should be taught, best methodology to use, and curriculum in foreign countries. Chemistry of space and chemistry of the future are addressed in sections III and IV respectively. Differing opinions on how to teach oxidation/reduction, thermodynamics, and valence shell electron pair model are presented in Section V. Section VI describes some simple experiments, including chemistry magic shows. The focus of Section VII is on the design, development, and implementation of low-cost equipment, in foreign countries including a mobile laboratory unit and a chemistry kit developed in Kenya. Instructions for a periodic table game, six card games, simulation of chemical kinetics, and simulated experiments using calculators are provided in Section VIII. The last section addresses relationships between chemistry and chemical education with industry. (JN)
