Bee-Wild about Pollinators!
Johnson, Bonnie; Kil, Jenny; Evans, Elaine; Koomen, Michele Hollingsworth
Science and Children, v52 n4 p44-48 Dec 2014
With their sunny stripes and fuzzy bodies, bees are beloved--but unfortunately, they are in trouble. Bee decline, of both wild bees as well as managed bees like honey bees, has been in the news for the last several years. Habitat loss, diseases, pests, and pesticides have made it difficult for bees to survive in many parts of our world (Walsh 2013). The authors' study grew out of a two-week summer professional development (PD) course they took at the University of Minnesota called Citizen Science Research for Teachers. Their citizen science project focused on pollinators, specifically bees. The unit described herein drew from the research projects that they conducted within that summer PD. Their five-day unit includes lessons on bee anatomy, bee communities, bee pollination, observing bees, and a short research study. Their study integrates science within reading and writing. They broke up each lesson by completing the guided reading portion first and implementing the activity later in the day. The bee study began with a preassessment of the students' knowledge about bees. The preassessment revealed that their students knew very little about pollinators and bees. By the end of the unit, their young students understood the basics of bee biology and the services that bees provide.
