Using Argument-Based Inquiry Strategies for STEM Infused Science Teaching

This article focuses on an argument-based inquiry (ABI) approach to a fourth grade unit on waves. A fourth-grade teacher included multiple opportunities for students to read, write, and use language to represent their understanding of physical science Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) performance expectations (NGSS Lead States 2013). He used the ABI approach for the STEM Infused Science Teaching (ASSIST) approach, which will be discussed briefly in this article and can be used to engage students in work with any science concept. In a follow-up interview, the fourth grade teacher who taught this unit indicated that the students were engaged throughout the lesson. Also, he noticed that when he taught the math portions of the lesson, the students were more attentive than they typically would be. He also indicated that being a self-contained teacher was beneficial to this lesson because he could use his language arts time to teach the reading lesson about different types of waves, and math time to teach about graphs, angles, and area.
