Incorporating Two-Square into Physical Education
Meyler, Tim; Wilson, Sandy
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v25 n5 p8-11 May-Jun 2012
Physical educators often struggle to teach individual striking skills to upper level (3-5 grade) elementary students. Finding a developmentally appropriate striking activity with a high participation rate can be a challenge. And sports such as tennis, pickleball, and badminton are often not an option for a variety of reasons (e.g., space or equipment). The striking game of two-square can prove to be the perfect activity for physical educators to implement in the elementary school setting. This article focuses on more complex skills in a two-square unit to foster high levels of student success. After several example lessons and experiments with different balls, nets, and striking methods, a two-square unit was developed that meets NASPE Standards 1, 2, & 6, meets students' needs, and enables utilization of gym space and equipment to its fullest potential. For support and the implementation of two-square into the classroom, this article describes various striking methods, rules, example activities, and the dimensions of and how to construct a two-square court.
