The Making of Champions: Inspiring Young Scientists

As part of the training of students aiming to be primary science education specialists, Goldsmiths College, London, devised a plan to involve nine schools in a special project: a science investigation challenge. A teacher from each school would be trained to lead their pupils through the steps in developing a complete investigation for a competition. The major goal of the project was for each pupil in a year 5 class in each school to conduct and present to a judge an investigation of their own design based on their current topic. The training for the teachers and students involved exploring the use of cooperative-learning teams as well as aspects of scientific enquiry. The teachers and coordinators who participated in the project were unanimously supportive of its value for their pupils and were all interested in carrying this process forward in the coming year.
