Assessing Dance in Elementary Physical Education. Assessment Series--Assessing Dance in Elementary Physical Education
Cone, Theresa Purcell; Cone, Stephen
American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NJ3)
"Assessing Dance in Elementary Physical Education" is a special edition of the NASPE Assessment Series for K-12 Physical Education. Elementary school physical educators finally have a book that can help them plan assessments for dance, an important part of a comprehensive physical education curriculum. Through dance, students develop their motor skills, gain an appreciation for different forms of dance, learn to create dances, collaborate with others, and increase their critical thinking skills. The authors describe how to design and implement feasible assessments that meet the objectives of a dance lesson or unit. This book is loaded with examples of assessment instruments that teachers can select from to assess whether their students are meeting the objectives of a dance unit. The samples can be used as is, or modified to fit individual programs. The authors also provide guidance on when and how to use each type of assessment tool, and provide special considerations that should be made in using each tool. As further help to teachers in deciding what type of assessment to use, the authors also present assessment examples for cultural, social, and creative dance forms for the K-2nd grades and 3rd-5th grades. After reading this book, teachers will have a new understanding of the important role assessment takes in planning effective dance units. Assessment can help motivate students, communicate with parents and administrators, and increase the credibility of dance education as part of a good physical education program. The authors present a strategy for planning assessment that begins with selecting objectives for the dance lesson or unit. Sometimes called "backward design", this helps teachers decide what needs to be taught. To make this step easier for teachers, the authors present suggested examples of objectives for cultural, social, and creative dance. This book gives teachers the "who, when and what" of dance assessment. They will know how to assess before, during, and after a lesson and when it is appropriate to use teacher, peer, or self-assessment. Teachers will be able to choose from a menu of over fifteen different assessment tools. Following a preface and an introduction, the book is divided into five parts: (1) Dance in the Physical Education Curriculum; (2) Assessment: Who, What, and When; (3) A Menu of Assessment Instruments; (4) Psychomotor, Cognitive, and Affective Assessment Samples; and (5) Putting It All Together.
