Coach-to-Coach Mentoring: Raising the Bar
Robertson, Scott; Hubball, Harry
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v18 n5 p6-10 May-Jun 2005
As an alternative method of coaching education, with a focus on situated learning, mentoring has the potential to encourage "communities of practice," which are groups of people who share a common interest and engage in a process of collective learning that creates bonds between them. In addition, mentoring has the potential to overcome the theory-practice coaching gap by creating stronger bonds between theory and practice for coaches at all levels of development. This article is designed for head coaches who are responsible for spearheading professional development and coaching-education initiatives within their sport organization. It is also helpful for coaches at all levels who are involved in mentoring relationships with less-experienced coaches. The article shows how mentoring proved to be applicable to novice-, intermediate-, and advanced-level coaches who were involved in a 12-week coach-to-coach mentoring program in a youth soccer academy.
