Making Learning Happen: A Guide for Post-Compulsory Education
Race, Phil
Paul Chapman Publishing
People have been trying to make learning happen throughout the recorded development of the human species-and no doubt for some time before anyone tried to describe it in words. There is now a vast literature about learning and teaching. Some of it is scholarly. There is also an abundant 'how to do it' literature, spanning learning, teaching and assessment. It sometimes feels as though there is a gulf between the two kinds of literature, with at least some academics climbing ever higher up their ivory towers, and at least some practice-based writers ignoring the wisdom which emanates from those towers. This book is the author's attempt to bridge the gap. Several chapters have referred to some of what he believes to be the most important scholarship underpinning best practice. However, this book does not set out to be a scholarly text, but rather an attempt to integrate how best to make learning happen in post-compulsory education by focusing on learners themselves, and on key factors underpinning successful learning. This book contains a Preface and eleven chapters: (1) Setting the Scene; (2) Five Factors Underpinning Successful Learning; (3) Beyond Learning Styles?; (4) Assessment Driving Learning; (5) Learning Through Feedback; (6) Making Learning Happen in Large Groups; (7) Making Learning Happen in Small Groups; (8) Responding to Diversity and Widening Participation; (9) Addressing Employability; (10) Putting the Learning into e-learning; and the final chapter, and (11) Making Workshops Work. It concludes with References and further reading along with an Index. (Contains 7 tables.) [This book was published by Paul Chapman Publishing.]
