Paraeducator Professional Development Curriculum. Module V: Assisting the Teacher in the Instruction of Mathematics. Trainer's Manual
Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory NWREL
This document provides paraeducators with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the content and pedagogy of elementary mathematics. The module serves two purposes: To increase the mathematical proficiency of participating paraprofessionals by engaging them in mathematical activities that are relevant to elementary mathematics. Activities in the module raise participants' awareness of the composite nature of successful mathematics learning by emphasizing five strands of mathematical proficiency that include understanding, computing, applying, reasoning, and engaging. Throughout the module, paraeducators are actively engaged with their peers in problem-solving tasks that focus on patterns, number concepts, relational thinking, and logic. This experience allows them to increase their own mathematical proficiency while working in a cooperative and supportive learning environment; to inform the paraprofessional of pedagogical best practices in the mathematics classroom with special emphasis on the importance of the instructional support they provide for students. The importance of asking good questions, of listening carefully to students' thinking, and of conveying a positive attitude toward the learning process are topics raised in the module within the context of mathematical learning experiences. The worksite assignments that accompany this module are designed to connect the topics of the training with the work experiences of the paraeducator through extension and application of each of the module's stated goals.
