Portland Public Schools, OR.
The manual contains secondary level materials designed to integrate career education concepts into the Roosevelt High school (Portland, Oregon) health education curriculum. The materials are divided into three sections. The first concerns self-concepts and presents: short-term activities designed to encourage students to begin thinking about themselves such as constructing a personal coat-of-arms and analyzing popular music; long-term activities for self-examination such as analyzing novels and writing epitaphs; and self-evaluation activities such as a self-esteem inventory and a maturity questionnaire. The second section, decision making, concerns: information gathering regarding food and nutrition; skill building through problem solving; and practical applications of decision making with respect to the functioning of the various systems of the human body, social health issues, and social problems. The third section, exploration, concerns: personal exploration of physical characteristics, physical fitness, health history, and family health; communication exploration of speech, hearing, body language, sight, and written forms of communication; evaluating and exploring careers in the health field; and activities beyond the classroom.
