This training program is designed to prepare paraprofessionals to work effectively as instructional personnel with preschool handicapped children educational settings. The program is divided into two sections: Preservice Training and Inservice Training. The preservice section focuses on the special relationship between the instructional associate and the teacher, the children, and the preschool. Also included is general information about handicapping conditions which can help the instructional associate serve preschool handicapped children appropriately. The inservice section focuses on the knowledge and skills the instructional associate needs to fulfill his or her role in instructional and instructionally related areas. The overall objectives of this program are to provide instructional associates with knowledge of: (1) the role of the paraprofessional as instructional associate, the role of the teacher as program manager, and the ways both of them work together for the benefit of children, and (2) past and current trends in society's attitudes toward handicapped children and how these beliefs and attitudes affect programs and services for handicapped children.
