One Indonesian student first learned of the program while working as a street vendor selling handicrafts in Jakarta. Today, she works for a television station in her native country as a newsperson and anchor. Another student was so impressed and gratified by his good fortune that he designed, promoted, and raised funds for a peace statue to erect in the small Wisconsin town where he studied. These and other student accounts illustrate the profound impact of the Community College Initiative (CCI) Program, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), part of the U.S. Department of State. Its influence ripples across the campuses of participating U.S. colleges and into their local communities--and spreads internationally as students return home to put their knowledge into practice. In this article, the authors share the results of the U.S. State Department program that provides opportunities for students from disadvantaged countries.
