Using Vignettes to Search for Education Deans
Wepner, Shelley B.; Wilhite, Stephen C.; D'Onofrio, Antonia
Perspectives: Policy and Practice in Higher Education, v15 n2 p59-68 2011
The purpose of this paper is to describe how vignettes can be used during an institution's interview process for an education dean. Education deans are confronted with personnel, programmatic, student, and organisational dilemmas on a daily basis. The fundamental responsibilities of the position require education deans to have a strong sense of ego development. Since deans need the staying power to persevere and function effectively, the personal attributes that they apply to their position make a difference to their ability to negotiate successfully within their professional environments. To better understand how deans would fare, dilemmas in the form of vignettes can help faculty and administration determine how a prospective candidate would solve problems. (Contains 1 table.)
