Therapeutic Recreation in the Community: An Inclusive Approach. Second Edition
Carter, Marcia Jean; LeConey, Stephen P.
Sagamore Publishing LLC
The second edition of Therapeutic Recreation in the Community: An Inclusive Approach reflects the changing and evolving nature of recreation and health care services. A number of social, economic, and political directives and technological advancements have fostered recreation in the community for all individuals. Due in part to a rising awareness of disability rights, concern for controlling escalating health care costs, and legislation that promotes accessible options, professionals are designing supports and services that embrace opportunities for individuals to be fully included in recreation experiences. Thus the intention is to provide and overview of the process and procedures professionals use to design programs to fully incorporate individuals with disabilities in community recreation. The revised edition is designed for professionals in recreation, therapeutic recreation, and related health and human service professions who provide recreation programs and services to all community residents. The text is useful to students enrolled in introductory course work in recreation, therapeutic recreation, and courses with a focus of inclusive recreation. The features that make this text useful to professionals and students include: (1) illustrations and resource materials presently used in public agencies to effect inclusion; (2) application of the APIE process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to the development of inclusive service options; (3) content and strategies for training professionals to accommodate persons with disabilities in recreation; (4) review of participant needs and implications for managing these needs during inclusion experiences; and (5) management and leadership recommendations to facilitate reasonable accommodations during program planning and delivery. The text is comprised of an introduction that overviews the directives and advancements resulting in inclusion. This is followed by six chapters: The first four chapters present elements from the APIE process and the use of the APIE process to develop inclusive programs; chapters five and six focus on participant needs and how to manage and motivate participants during inclusive experiences. The final section is a case study that uses the forms presented in the text to apply the APIE process. Figures within the text are field-based documents and resources that may be replicated by professionals to use during their agency programs and while training professionals. Illustrations represent the spectrum of staffing patterns and organizations found in the public sector. Following an Introduction, the book is divided into six chapters. The following chapters are included: (1) Defining the Service: Assessing the Community and Agency; (2) Personnel Resources; (3) Marketing and Advocacy; (4) Direct Services; (5) Individuals with Disabilities; and (6) Motivating and Managing Participants. The book concludes with a Cast Study and an Index.
