Measuring Penny
Lee, Mi Yeon; Francis, Dionne Cross
Teaching Children Mathematics, v25 n4 p232-241 Jan 2019
Children's literature can provide useful contexts for teaching mathematics. In this article, the authors discuss the use of the children's book "Measuring Penny" (Leedy 1997) to support Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) (CCSSI 2010) related to length measurement. The authors first describe three types of misconceptions about length that they observed in kindergarten students as they engaged in a measurement task. Then they describe activities generated from "Measuring Penny" that they used to support young children in developing measurement conceptions; specifically, that the length of an object can be found by laying multiple copies of shorter, equal-size objects end to end.
