The Impact of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program Based on the American School Counselor Association's Recognized Model Program on Student Achievement and College/Career Readiness

The following research sought to investigate the impact of a comprehensive school counseling program based on the American School Counselor Association's Recognized (ASCA) Model Program known as RAMP, on student achievement and college readiness. The study was conducted on a comprehensive high school campus in California, which included 2,700 participants in grades 9 through 12. Curriculum lessons, group counseling, and individual counseling interventions were measured for effectiveness through descriptive statistics, perception data, and process data. Further, a targeted student group of freshman African American students was identified through the RAMP process, and this research measured the impact on targeted interventions with underperforming student groups. This study sought to analyze impact on students' achievement and college/career readiness through RAMP implementation. The mixed-method study used school archival data coupled with student perception data to analyze program effectiveness and results. Results yielded a positive academic growth for all students regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender. The African American targeted group demonstrated growth in achievement and college/career readiness, which indicates that RAMP is an effective tool in closing educational achievement gaps.
