This digest is a compilation of the more significant statistical material available in the Office of Education on the American educational system. It contains information on a variety of subjects within the broad field of educational statistics, including schools, enrollments, teachers, graduates, educational attainment, finances, and Federal programs in the field of education. It should prove useful to persons interested in the nature and scope of education in the United States, and in particular to those individuals who are concerned with the formulation and conduct of educational policy. The digest is divided into four major parts: (1) All levels of education; (2) Elementary and secondary education; (3) Higher education, with a special section on land-grant institutions; and (4) Federal programs of education, including notes on Office of Education programs and selected data on programs administered under the National Defense Education Act of 1958. Appendices contain an organization chart of the United States Office of Education, 1962; and a document describing the functions and structure of the Office of Education.
