A Spoonful of Sugar
Fedore, Heidi
Principal Leadership, v6 n2 p27-30 Oct 2005
In 2002, with pressure on students and educators mounting regarding performance on standardized tests, the author, who is an assistant principal at Skyline High School in Issaquah, Washington, and some staff members decided to have a little fun in the midst of the preparation for the state's high-stakes test, the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). The previous year, the Seattle-area high school had been listed in the bottom 10 in the state for performance on the WASL, and tensions were brewing because of the unfavorable publicity. Although they hoped that eventually their students would meet the standards on the WASL, everyone was discouraged by the previous year's test scores. In this article, the author describes how they used music, video, characters, and staff members' support to encourage students to do well on the state standardized test. Their aim, of course, was to support their students, but they ended up with improved test scores; positive publicity; and most important, a collectively warm feeling about their efforts.
