Teaching High School Physical Education According to National Standards: The 6 Verbs of Success--Demonstrate, Understand, Participate, Achieve, Exhibit and Value
Bert, Greg
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v23 n4 p28-31 Mar-Apr 2010
The six national content standards from NASPE define what a student should know and be able to do as a result of a high quality physical education program. The "NASPE SIX" serve as a North Star to guide teachers as they prepare and implement programs. Simply stated, the NASPE Standards for Physical Education are all about six simple verbs: (1) demonstrate; (2) understand; (3) participate; (4) achieve; (5) exhibit; and (6) value. Trying to imagine today's students in the future can shape the content of high school physical education curricula. If physical educators teach with the future in mind (along with the six national standards) they can begin to build a viable and valuable program. One such program that is teaching with the future in mind is Black Hills High School (BHHS) in Tumwater, Washington. BHHS has been recognized by NASPE as a STARS program. The STARS program recognizes schools that meet 31 criteria; all based on NASPE standards. Here the author examines how BHHS meets each of the six standards in relation to high school physical education while incorporating both lifetime fitness and lifetime sport skills.
