Secondary Analysis of the Relationship between Language Proficiency and English Language Learners' Performance on Standardized Assessments
Carter, Bridget C.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Hampton University
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship of language proficiency (WIDA) on the performance of third, fourth, and fifth grade English language learners who were administered the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments during the 2017-2018 assessment year. The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) reading and math assessments were used as the dependent variable and the English Language Proficiency (WIDA) levels were used as the independent variable. Second language acquisition theory, the prism model, and situational learning theory laid the foundational framework for the study. Simple and hierarchical regressions were used to answer the questions: (1) How well can standardize test scores be predicted by English proficiency scores? (2) How well can standardize test scores be predicted by English proficiency scores while controlling for gender? (3) How well can standardized test scores be predicted by English proficiency scores while controlling for grade level? English language learners were expected to meet proficiency levels on reading and math assessments no matter their level of language proficiency. The results of the study supported the hypothesis that language proficiency (WIDA) is a significant predictor of achievement of English language learners on the Standards of Learning (SOL) reading and math assessments.
