A Study of the Effect of the 'Brain Gym' Intervention on the Math and Reading Achievement Scores of Fourth Grade Students
Szczasny, Annette L.
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
Brain Gym is a movement-based program designed to address a diverse range of students academic and behavioral needs by promoting whole-brain learning. However, the scientific research-base supporting Brain Gym is limited and findings are inconclusive. This study's goal was to evaluate the effects of Brain Gym movements on fourth grade students academic achievement in the areas of mathematics and reading. The researcher asked the question, Do fourth grade students who receive regularly scheduled brain breaks have higher reading and math achievement scores than those who do not? and Does gender impact these scores? To answer these questions, a quasi-experimental, quantitative study was conducted in a school district located in the south suburbs of a major Midwestern city. This study included an analysis of AIMSweb scores and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) scores. Research findings suggest that the number of brain breaks students have has little to no impact on their achievement in math or reading and that gender does not impact achievement scores.
