The Impact of Implementing a Reading Workshop Strategy on the Reading Comprehension of Fifth-Grade Students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Alshehri, Hamoud A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
Most students in Saudi Arabia struggle with reading, especially reading comprehension. The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the effects of adapting and implementing an American workshop strategy on fifth-grade Saudi students' reading comprehension. The long-term goal is to increase Saudi students' reading comprehension in general and help prevent reading difficulties in Saudi schools. The study applied a between-within subjects analysis of variance, with two independent variables: between-subjects and within-subjects. This design was used because the researcher tested and compared two different groups exposed to two or more conditions. The reading workshop treatment had a significant positive effect on student reading comprehension performance. However, more research is needed to determine if this impact would justify the cost and effort of implementing the workshop as a standard part of school curriculum.
