An Investigation into the Effectiveness of the WhyTry Intervention Program for Middle School Students in the Eighth Grade
Kinman, David Wayne
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D.Ed.Lead. Dissertation, Union University
In this study, the researcher examined the effectiveness of the WhyTry social skills program through the correlation of student behavioral change and improved attendance, after completing the 10 metaphor lessons over the course of a semester middle school curriculum rotation. The WhyTry program is designed to address a whole child approach rather than a specific, targeted behavior, which allows the program to be implemented as a curriculum. This study was conducted to determine whether the WhyTry social skills program generalizes a positive response in increased daily attendance and diminished disciplinary referrals. In this study, the researcher examined whether a statistically significant difference existed in attendance and disciplinary referrals over the course of three years following the implementation of the WhyTry program in a suburban middle school. Attendance data were acquired through a computer program called STAR_Student. The attendance data were gathered each semester for a cohort of students in each semester of their sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade years. The number of disciplinary referrals were acquired through a software system called School-Wide Information System. Disciplinary referral data were gathered each semester for a cohort of students in each semester of their sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade years. The researcher used a One-Way Repeated Measures ANOVA to compare the attendance and disciplinary data for each semester of the participants in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. This was accomplished by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software program. The WhyTry program was statistically significant with improving attendance and fewer disciplinary referrals. It was also determined that the WhyTry program would need continual application to maintain effectiveness.
