ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delta State University
Introduced in the era of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and continued with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), states are required to assess students in English Language Arts. The Mississippi Department of Education, in accordance with NCLB and later ESSA, developed the statewide accountability and accreditation model to measure student progress to assigns an accountability grade to schools in the state based upon student proficiency and growth. Instruction in schools must continually push the students to perform better each year to meet the demands of the accountability model. In an effort to increase student performance, some school districts are turning to One-to-One computer initiatives to drive student achievement. Utilizing data from the Rankin County School District, the test scores of 1,355 students were examined to study the link between students issued a one-to-one computer and test scores achieved on an English Language Arts assessment. Results illustrated that there was no statistically significant difference in the test scores of students who had a one-to-one laptop and students who did not.
