Leadership Styles at Middle- and Early-College Programs: A Quantitative Descriptive Correlational Study

The purpose of this quantitative descriptive correlational study was to determine if associations existed between middle- and early-college (MEC) principals' leadership styles, teacher motivation, and teacher satisfaction. MEC programs were programs designed to assist high school students who were not served well in a traditional setting (Middle College National Consortium, 2009). The primary goals of MEC programs were dropout prevention and assisting program participants matriculate into college. Thirtyeight teachers shared their perceptions of their principal's leadership styles. The instrument used to gather data was the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire version 5X (MLQ 5X). Spearman's rho correlation and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to test the null hypotheses. Spearman's rho correlation tests produced negative and positive correlation coefficients when transformational, transactional, and laissezfaire leadership styles were tested against motivation and satisfaction. The coefficients indicated associations existed between the variables. Two one-way ANOVAs produced F statistics and p values indicating significant variances between groups. The significance level of 0.05 was the confidence level used in the ANOVAs. The first ANOVA measured 13 statements related to teacher motivation, F(12, 469) = 4.51, p < 0.05. The second ANOVA measured 12 statements related to leadership satisfaction, F(11, 441) = 3.38, p < 0.05. Post hoc Tukey tests revealed significant differences in the means of the specific statements rated by respondents. This quantitative descriptive correlational study indicated teachers' perceived transformational leadership as the most prevalent leadership style used by MEC principals.
