Online Student Orientation: Guerrilla Style
Swett, Denise
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v48 n5 p26-35 2016
Technology resources play an integral part in college students achieving their academic goals, and yet higher education is often behind in adopting the most appropriate contemporary technology. Just over three-quarters of Gen Z students believe that their online experiences will help them achieve academic success, and more than half say they like to share their knowledge with others online and do it often. Foothill College, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, has been offering online classes since 1994 when college faculty developed its own Etudes online learning platform. Given their years of experience, the college assumed that adding an online orientation would be a case of business as usual. The college soon learned however, that this new generation of college students have high expectations and can be quite opinionated about what they want and how they want it. They are global, social, visual, and technological. They are the most connected, educated and sophisticated generation ever (McCrindle, 2015). Intensive student engagement is the key to student success and needs to happen early and often in community college students. This article describes the process in which Foothill College formed a work team, consisting of three involved students, along with faculty, staff, and managers to identify an online orientation provider and help to develop ideal content and delivery of an informative student orientation.
