The theme for National History Day during 1998-99 school year is "Science, Technology, Invention in History: Impact, Influence, Change. National History Day competition has two divisions based on school grade: junior division--grades 6, 7, and 8; and senior division--grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. This teacher guide provides teachers with classroom materials to help students gain an understanding of the historical, economic, and social ramifications of science, medicine, engineering, computers, technology, and related subjects bridging the gap between history and the sciences. Young people need to understand that although technology depends upon mathematics and science, it responds to and is shaped by human values and that these values vary from time to time and place to place. The booklet includes teaching strategies for using National History Day in the classroom, lessons on several topics related to the theme, possible topic suggestions for student research, and a selective bibliography of resources. Lessons in the booklet assist students in focusing on a topic and understanding its significance in history through the use of primary sources. The booklet is divided into the following sections: (1) "Introduction: What Is National History Day?"; (2) "Ideas and Materials: Teaching about Science, Technology, Invention in History"; (3) "Theme Narrative, Topic Ideas and Bibliography: Science, Technology, Invention in History"; (4) "Getting Caught Up in the Web: Computer Technology, The Internet and National History Day"; (5) "Ideas and Materials: Teaching about Science, Technology, Invention with Historic Places"; (6) "Lesson Plan: Factories and Technology in Industrializing America"; (7) "Lesson Plan: Patents and Invention in American History"; (8) "Lesson Plan: Family History and Flight Technology"; (9) "Essay: The Scientific Revolution in Pre-Modern Europe"; and (10) "Lesson Plan: Medicine, Healing and the Body." The accompanying contest guide, written for students, contains rules that must be followed to compete in any level of the History Day competition. The guide provides an overview, rules for all categories, category rules, and criteria on how entries are evaluated. (BT)
