Rethinking Classroom Management: Strategies for Prevention, Intervention, and Problem Solving.
Belvel, Patricia Sequeira; Jordan, Maya Marcia
This book illustrates an approach to achieving a positive, harmonious classroom environment which enables educators to evolve effectively from managers to leaders by rethinking their roles as teachers, discussing how to create classrooms where students are more self-managing and demonstrate mutual respect, self-esteem, and responsibility. Key topics that guide this transformation are: intrinsic motivation and personal beliefs and values as aids to making the shift from manager to leader; prevention strategies creating a caring community of learners; temporary intervention techniques that effectively differentiate between discipline and punishment; and problem solving strategies to help the student take initiative in creating constructive solutions for all. There are eight chapters in three parts. Part 1, "Rethinking Our Role in the Classroom," includes: (1) "Shifting from Manager to Leader" and (2) "Changing Our Style to Match Our Beliefs." Part 2, "The Four 'Ps' of Prevention: Personal, Prerequisites, Parameters, and Participation," includes: (3) "Personal Relationships for Trust: The First 'P' of Prevention"; (4) "Prerequisites for Success: The Second 'P' of Prevention"; (5) "Parameters for Cooperation: The Third 'P' of Prevention"; and (6) "Participation for Involvement: The Fourth 'P' of Prevention." Part 3, "Intervention Techniques and Problem-Solving Strategies," includes: (7) "Rethinking Classroom Interventions" and (8) "Solution: Focused, Problem-Solving Strategies." (Contains 87 references.)
