Foreign Languages: PreK-12 Sunshine State Standards and Instructional Practices. Florida Curriculum Framework.
Florida State Dept. of Education, Tallahassee.
This curriculum framework is a guide for local education communities as they restructure their schools and improve foreign language planning. Grounded in national and state reform efforts, this guide for teachers to help students achieve the Sunshine State Standards, presents broad, overarching ideas for the development of curriculum and instruction. It delineates what knowledge and skills Florida will hold schools accountable for in Grades preK-2 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. It also highlights strands and standards for foreign languages in five areas: communication (e.g., students engage in conversation, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions); culture (students understand the relationship between the perspectives and products of the culture studied and use this knowledge to recognize cultural practices); connections (e.g., students reinforce and further knowledge of other disciplines through foreign language); comparisons (e.g., students recognize that languages have different patterns of communication and apply this knowledge to their own culture); and experiences (students use the language within and beyond the school setting). After an introduction, nine chapters include the following: (1) "Visioning"; (2) "Goal 3 Standards" (from "Florida's System of School Improvement and Accountability); (3) "Foreign Languages Sunshine State Standards"; (4) "Teaching and Learning"; (5) "Curricular Connections through Instruction"; (6) "Assessment"; (7) "The Learning Environment"; (8) "Professional Development"; and (9) "Foreign Language Program Improvement." The ACTFL proficiency guidelines are attached. (SM)
