Female Veteran Counselors Regarding Student Characteristics and Resultant Service Strategies in Taiwan
Lin, Yii-Nii
College Student Journal, v46 n4 p730-747 Dec 2012
The purpose of this study was to describe perceptions of female veteran counselors regarding student characteristics and resultant strategies for counseling services at three science/engineering research-oriented universities in northern Taiwan. This study adopted a qualitative method of phenomenology utilizing in-depth interviews for data collection. The twelve participants' ages ranged from 30 to 45 years old with an average age of 38.85. The themes that emerged from data analysis included participant perceptions of university and campus culture, student characteristics and major types of problems, and the focus of counseling treatment and service strategies. Counselors highlight diverse and multi-channelled counseling services as key to ever-changing students, and emphasize counseling services to match characteristics, leverage strengths, and complement weaknesses of students. In addition, counselors emphasize the importance of advocacy of counseling services and the establishment of a professional image and reputation for university counseling centers.
