Alumni relations and stewardship officers have the makings of a strong partnership. Alumni relations and stewardship can be a natural fit--a perfect match even--according to Mary Jo Chiara of St. Joseph's College (SJC) in New York. Both strive to cultivate long-term relationships with constituents and build increasing levels of engagement and support. As associate vice president of alumni relations and stewardship at SJC, Chiara knows firsthand the synergies and conflicts. When things go awry, she says, often it is because one or both sides of the house view constituents as personal property. This conflict reflects the historic relationship between alumni and development offices--a time when there was less integration in advancement and the disciplines were more territorial. The struggle remains pronounced at institutions where advancement operations are new. Donor relations officers wring their hands when the alumni side seemingly hordes valuable contacts. Alumni officers worry that dollar-seeking fundraisers will pester their most valuable leaders and volunteers. The bottom line, however, is that donors rarely distinguish between solicitations from fundraisers, stewardship activities from donor relations officers, and outreach from alumni relations professionals. Each unit makes an impression on donors' overall view of the institution.
