The Positive Impact of Personal Goal Setting on Assessment

This action research is a quantitative study of personal goal setting and how it affects the academic performance of third grade students on weekly Math, Reading, and Language Arts assessments in a proactive effort to increase individual performance on standardized tests. The students' weekly performance was indicative of their expected performance on the standardized test. Each student set a personal goal for each weekly assessment based on their past grades and level of understanding. The students charted their performance, noting if they met the individualized, targeted goals. Their performance average was compared on the weekly assessments three weeks prior and following the personal goal setting. The study found personal goal setting to be a strong motivator for increasing student performance on assessments and self-efficacy. (Contains 8 tables.)
