Considering Protective Factors as a Tool for Teacher Resiliency
Muller, Susan M.; Gorrow, Teena R.; Fiala, Kelly A.
Education, v131 n3 p545-555 Spr 2011
This study examined characteristics associated with resiliency among pre-service teachers and public school teachers. Participants completed a 34-item survey developed to represent measurements for the six protective factors most strongly associated with resiliency as defined by Henderson: purpose & expectations (PE), nurture & support (NS), positive connections (PC), meaningful participation (MP), life guiding skills (LGS), and clear & consistent boundaries (CCB). Respondents utilized a five point Likert scale that ranged from strongly agree to strongly disagree to respond to each item. An exploratory factor analysis was used to identify sets of variables that explain as much of the original variance as possible. Means and standard deviations were calculated for each of the resulting factors. An independent t-test or analysis of variance (ANOVA) was utilized to determine if there were differences for each of the reliable scales based on demographic variables. Results indicate that although the six protective factors are present, they contribute to resiliency for educators in an unequal manner and might contain meaningful sub-groupings that vary in importance based upon the age of the teacher. The information gained regarding protective factors among teachers can be used by school administrators to help foster resiliency and increase retention rates. (Contains 3 tables and 2 diagrams.)
