Amnesty Policies: In Search of Best Practices
Bucklew, Kathy
College and University, v88 n2 p63-68 Fall 2012
"Fresh start" or amnesty policies have made their way across American universities and colleges. As the Director of Student Enrollment Services/Registrar at Polk State College, in Winter Haven, Florida, the author, who was not a proponent of amnesty, set aside time for several weeks to research amnesty policies and related best practices. Her research included review of amnesty policies currently in effect at 50 randomly chosen institutions, including two-year and four-year, private and public, large and small. She hoped to discover a more palatable way to manage the reenrollment of students whose previous academic status was unsatisfactory. At the conclusion of her review of amnesty policies, she found that giving students a fresh academic start seemed more reasonable to her than when she first undertook her research, and she provides a list of criteria she feels are necessary for a successful policy.
