It's about Relationships: A Response to Professor Turnbull
Westling, David L.
Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities, v37 n3 p217-219 2012
Although the author has written, conducted research, and lectured about parents of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and he is a parent himself, he is not the parent of an individual with a disability. Viewing from the experience of life "without" a child with IDD in it, it is reasonable to assume that there are very few who understand the implications of a life that includes a person with IDD. Most people have not spent their lives trying to learn about and share information about this population. As Professor Turnbull points out, "the forces that limit liberty are attitudinal, deeply cultural." This means that those parents and families, and even advocates who "do" think a great deal about persons with IDD and their lives, often are faced with the difficulty of helping those on the other side of the divide understand the importance of helping the individual with IDD achieve a satisfactory quality of life and the freedom that should come with it. This article presents the author's response to Professor Turnbull.
