Teachers' Perspective on whether the Mathematics Reform Will Change Turkey's Ranking in TIMSS

Turkish elementary mathematics program was revised in 2005. In 2011, Turkey participated in TIMSS at the 4th-grade level for the first time. 4th graders were educated using the new curriculum and thus their success rate on TIMSS can be considered as an evaluation of the new program. This study investigated Turkish 4th grade teachers' expectation of success and the changes they think are needed to rank better in the future. Research was conducted on 202 of the 250 4th-grade teachers whose students would represent Turkey in TIMSS 2011. Data analysis revealed that teachers rate current 4th graders' prior knowledge slightly below grade level. Teachers' predictions on what percentage of the questions students would answer in each mathematical area and each cognitive level was estimated. Students' predicted success rate based on geographical regions, residential locations and teacher's experience were also analyzed. (Contains 5 tables.)
