Using Innovative Playgrounds and Cross-Curricular Design to Increase Physical Activity
Dotterweich, Andy R.; Greene, Amy; Blosser, Daniel
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v83 n5 p47-51, 55 May-Jun 2012
Childhood obesity and physical inactivity are serious threats to the health and wellness of school children. Research has shown that play and physical activity are important for children's development, behavior, and academic achievement. In Tennessee, through the efforts of the Coordinated School Health program and a Physical Education for Progress grant, Loudon County Schools were able to construct multiple adventure playgrounds at elementary schools. These playgrounds have been used for cross-curricular units in an effort to address the wellness needs of students. The program has had a great deal of anecdotal success and could be replicated at other locations. This article provides program examples. (Contains 2 tables.)
